Caption and character counter

Count characters, words, hashtags and emojis, and see if your post fits the platform.

Nothing kills a good post like being cut off mid-sentence. Paste your text and see the count against each platform's limit before you hit publish.

Why use it

  • Write once and see straight away where it fits and where it needs trimming.
  • Avoid SMS surprises: one emoji can cut the length of a text message from 160 characters to 70 and double the cost of a broadcast.
  • Keep hashtags under control, with a count of how many you have used.

How it works

  1. Paste or type your caption, post or message.
  2. Pick the platform you are writing for, or see them all at once.
  3. Watch the counts for characters, words, hashtags and emojis update as you type.
  4. Trim until it fits, then copy it out.

Good to know

  • Twitter doubled its post limit from 140 to 280 characters in 2017.
  • The 160-character text message is credited largely to German engineer Friedhelm Hillebrand, who helped set the limit in the 1980s.
  • The hashtag on Twitter was first suggested in 2007 by Chris Messina. Twitter later made hashtags clickable.

Questions

Why does my SMS count drop to 70 characters?

Standard texts use a basic character set that fits 160 characters. An emoji or some special characters switch the whole message to a different encoding that fits only 70. Longer messages are split into parts, and each part is usually charged.

Do emojis count as one character?

Not always. Many emojis are stored as two or more characters, and some platforms count them that way. That is why your count and a platform's count can differ slightly.

Are these limits up to date?

They are the commonly published limits at the time of writing, but platforms change them and paid or premium accounts can have different ones. If a limit really matters, check the platform's own help pages.

Is my text saved?

Only on your own device, if at all. Nothing you type is sent to us.

Please note

Provided free, as is, for general use. It is not marketing or legal advice. Counts are estimates: platforms count some characters, emojis and links differently, and they change their limits without notice. Check the platform's current rules for anything important, and you are responsible for what you publish.
