VAT, GST and sales tax calculator

Add tax to a price, or take it out. Any rate, any currency, with the working shown.

Two questions come up all the time: what is the price with tax, and how much of this total is tax? This answers both, and shows the sum so you can check it.

Why use it

  • Get prices right before you quote, so tax does not eat your profit.
  • Work out the tax inside a receipt for your records.
  • See the working, so you understand it and can explain it.

How it works

  1. Enter the amount.
  2. Choose whether the amount already includes tax.
  3. Pick a rate or type your own.
  4. Read the net amount, the tax and the total, with the working.

Good to know

  • VAT was first brought in nationally by France in 1954. Its designer, Maurice Lauré, was a French tax official.
  • To remove tax from a total, divide by 1 plus the rate. Taking 7.5% off a total is a common mistake: it gives the wrong answer.

Questions

How do I remove VAT from a price?

Divide the total by 1 plus the rate. At 7.5%, divide by 1.075. At 20%, divide by 1.2. The difference between the total and that result is the tax.

What is the VAT rate in my country?

Rates differ by country and sometimes by product, and they change. The presets are a starting point; confirm the current rate with your tax authority.

Is VAT the same as GST or sales tax?

They are similar taxes on spending with different names and rules. The arithmetic here works for all of them.
